FISD’s First Dual Language Students Graduate

As if the graduating class of 2020 wasn’t unique enough, among these seniors from Forney ISD are the first group of students to have completed Forney’s Dual Language Program from the beginning of their public school careers. These young adults began their kindergarten year in what was, at the time, a brand new, limited enrollment program designed to immerse students in an equally Spanish and English learning environment throughout their education. A top of the line system that utilizes a two-way dual language learning model, students are taught basic reading courses in their native language for the first two years of school. In the years following, the boys and girls take classes that are taught in both English and Spanish and spend their instruction time working on projects with a student partner of the opposite native language. This heavy level of immersion has allowed students to go on to achieve high goals in their education, not only in language arts but in all subject areas.

Harvey Martin and I enjoyed the Class in College!

Harvey Martin and I enjoyed the Class in College!

I had a casual acquaintance there, who later became a semi-friend, classmate, and sometimes lunch table partner when we both happened to dine at Central Cafeteria—Harvey Banks Martin—“All-American” at ET and “STAR” for the Dallas Cowboys, when they were still the COW-BOYS!
