With the opener of the general deer season last weekend in North Texas, many of us have been making last minute preparations for upcoming hunts. On many ranches managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD), deer hunting began in early October and hunters were allowed to use all legal sporting arms to harvest deer but for the majority of us across most of Texas, November 6 is the official opener of what we old timers used to call ‘gun season’.
The boys and girls varsity golf teams played in the Bridges invitational at Firewheel in Garland recently. The boys team finished 13th in the team competition. Leading the way for the Jackrabbits was freshman Jackson Belobraydic. Other notables were senior Austin George, junior Brennan Horton, seniors Andre Kielczewski and Austin White. The girls varsity team finished 5th place overall in the team competition. Leading the way for the Jackrabbits was junior Alexis Abart. Other notables were seniors Lilli Wehmeyer, Chloe Crane, sophomores Emma Chaney and Makayla Peek. This was the varsity’s last tournament in the fall and will go into the offseason to prepare for spring events.
On Veterans Day, we honor the men and women who have served in our armed forces. The Forney Lions Club recently came to Forney ISD and provided free eye exams and glasses for students in Forney ISD! The Forney ISD Health Services Department referred 80 students in need of professional evaluation and free glasses to the event. The Lion’s Club was able to secure two doctors to provide the evaluations.
During a ceremony on Nov. 1 to celebrate Texas Municipal Courts Week at Mesquite Municipal Court, the City of Mesquite announced Kristi Holt as the 2021 Clerk of the Year and Ronald D. Parker as the 2021 Deputy Marshal of the Year.

Delta Kappa Gamma’s Kaufman County Chapter, Alpha Tau, uses this year’s theme (Journey—which way will you go?) when planning for the year. On September 14, a planning meeting was held at the Kaufman County Library. Members signed up for committees, decided upon goals, and discussed and planned programs and projects. They also socialized at the beginning, using a back-toschool theme meal and mimicking students eating in the cafeteria with sack lunches. During this meeting, members were recognized for their years of service—Jerri Coates for 20 years and Nancy Shaw for 30 years.

Countless hours of practice and preparation culminated this week for the Forney High School Band when they competed in the 2021 UIL State Marching Band Championships. Held at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, the contest began with the top thirtythree 5A marching bands in the state, who performed in the preliminary competition on Monday.
