Retail holidays now dot the consumer landscape throughout much of the year. That shift has made a day like Black Friday somewhat less unique than it was in years past. However, Black Friday remains the unofficial kickoff to the holiday shopping season, and it’s still a major day for retailers big and small.

As football teams across Texas have been wrapping up their regular-season games, student-athletes and coaches alike have been left with feelings ranging from excitement to disappointment and everything in between. For one Kaufman County football coach, he has also been left feeling a bit lighter, and possibly chillier, physically speaking.

On Tuesday November 14th, Conservative State Representative Keith Bell filed his paperwork with the Republican Party of Texas, seeking the nomination for re-election to represent District 4 in the Texas House. One of the most American holidays is upon us now – Thanksgiving! The beginning of the holiday is somewhat common lore with the Native Americans helping the Pilgrims to survive and eventually thrive. The example that the Native Americans gave the Pilgrims and the world at large is to help your fellow man when you have plenty, regardless of your differences.

Hosting Thanksgiving is a large undertaking that can put some hosts under pressure. Unlike some other holidays that are less foodfocused, Thanksgiving is largely about the meal. Turkey is the centerpiece of the celebration, and any guests who come over are going to expect turkey and a number of side dishes. Leaving hungry is never an option on Thanksgiving.

I have known of Mr. Ed (Eddie) Whittemore for many, many years, going back to when I was a little league baseball player, who watched the Forney High School Baseball Team play on the Legion Field. One of my favorites to watch was the guy they called, “EDDIE” or “WHITTEMORE.”

Questions concerning the exact wording of the FHS SCHOOL SONG and its origination have again arisen. So, “Here We Go!”—again. The Forney Band Director for 5 or so years in the mid-‘60s was a very talented man by the name of JOHN G. MILNOR, and he agreed to write the words and music for the song, “Forever Forney High,” which we now play before the beginning of each Varsity Football Game and many times again at the end. And nearly every year, someone asks me the words of the original song, and then that person sometimes believes me but other times says words like the following, “Nah, that ain’t right…..we always sung it this way!”

The Forney “FIGHT SONG” was also printed in the 1964 Jackrabbit Annual. It was supposed to be sung to the tune of “Hey, Look Me Over.”

B Dear Aunt B, I have grandchildren that I want to spend time with. I actually get very little time with them. The other grandparents seem to have unlimited time. When I ask for more time, I am told that they are very busy and there just isn’t any more time available. The next thing I know, I hear about something where they have spent spontaneous time with the other grandparents and had so much fun.

Here we are, another Thanksgiving looming over us. I don’t know what to say. Should we talk about the fallacy that is the first Thanksgiving? Should we stop to consider the ridiculousness that is believing a group of Wampanoag Indians welcomed the Pilgrims with open arms, taught them how to live these mean lands, ate with them, and just disappeared into the mist? Here, colonists, take this land and create a white culture dedicated to liberty and opportunity. We’ll just be over here not doing much. Don’t kill the thankful messenger. The Smithsonian agrees with me. But anywho, that’s not what we need to talk about today. I happen to love and adore Thanksgiving. It’s my personal chance to reflect on the grace that has occurred in my life, for the mercies bestowed upon me that I did not deserve, for the tenderness shown me that I haven’t always paid forward. Yet, it’s different now that I don’t have parents in this world. My kiddos are spread out more often that I’d like. Turns out (maybe take notes on this if your children are still under your roof) that kids tend to grow up and learn to live, think, and feast autonomously. They migrate to places where they cannot get back to you on a dime. They are surrounded by other wonderful people called in-laws, who share in your love and admiration of them and who also enjoy their company. They have to do this thing called “sharing the holidays.” Here I sit. No parents. No set plans. No menu. Thanksgiving orphans unite.
